REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: During the 1960's I lived in Anchorage with a native woman named Sandra, who had grown up in the village of Lake Iliamna, AK. Whenever we were sitting around one of us would begin remin- iscing about the good old days. A few times she would recount an incident during her childhood. She said she was about five and her parents had gone to the store and left her in the cabin, alone. It was a warm, sunny summer day and they left the door open. While playing with her doll in the sun (on the floor) a deep shadow fell over her and she smelled a bad stench. Looking up at the door she saw a huge, hairy figure standing and staring at her. Several seconds passed. She heard a whistle from outside. The creature turned and ran away. Soon her parents returned and she told them about it. They said, "Yes, the Hairy Men were seen around here. They get hungry and come down from the mouontains to forage for food in the garbage." Hairy men, I learned were egeiak. This is the Aleut word for Bigfoot. The spelling is questionable but Sandra's story is not. She was naive to the point of being childish. I felt certain she had not made up the story and asked her about Bigfoot. She had never heard of Bigfoot. So, I explained about the Bigoot stories down in the South 48. Sandra heard a whistling from outside. She said this was their way of communicating with one another. Through the mail I contacted the attorney for the village elders of Lake Iliamna and he verified that tales of The Hairy Men had been passed down through many generations in that area. He said he had never seen one but knew many who had. He added that: "As long as we don't bother them they won't bother us."
