You must realize that this siting took place some 27 years ago, but I have never forgotten it, and it is as clear in my mind as if it were yesterday. I don't think anyone I told about this ever believed me, and the one letter I wrote to a place called "The Big Foot Tracking Station" (I believe in Washington State) shortly after the siting, never wrote me back. So, it has just remained an extraordinary memory. Maybe though, it might help somehow with research, etc. Second, it must be kept in mind that the place where I encountered this "Skunk Ape", 27 years ago was quite rural. Today the spot has a 4 lane major/conjested thoroughfare running through it. At the time of the siting, it was a two lane country road and my high school which had just opened the previous year was the only "major" building around. The sighting occurred on the side of the road, located directly in front of a small country residence/farm/ranch where my best friend and I rode horses regularly during the day. We never saw anything when riding before or after the siting. The siting took place at approximately 2:00 a.m. So here it is... I was 16 and a passenger in my stepmother's car. We were returning to her house in the early morning after leaving the Daytona International Speedway where we had been with friends and family watching the Paul Revere 250 Road Race. We turned onto Taylor Road in Port Orange, and in approximately 2 minutes were approaching the small farm where my best friend and I regularly road horses. I can't recall now though what the man's name was that owned the farm. As we approached the end of his fenced property (which when traveling the direction we were going was on the opposite side of the road, closer to the driver's side of the car). Between the fence of his property and the roadway, the creature was in a squatting position. It was such a long time ago, directions to Taylor Road aren't that clear, but what I saw was. I believe we took Tomoka Farms Road that night and turned onto Taylor Road. Then there was not a traffic light at the turn, but today there is. I'm not even sure the small farm where we road horses is even still there. So basically, the location was approximately 1 to 1.5 miles in on Taylor Road from Tomoka Farms Road, right on the side of the road. There was a small creek that ran through the property where the sighting occurred. At the time the area surrounding was heavily wooded and nearby there was a small rock quarry/pond/lake.

REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: I noticed a figure squatting on the side of the road. The figure was illuminated by the headlights of the car. We were not driving very fast, and as we got closer, the blood kind of drained from my body because I was having trouble comprehending what I was seeing. It looked like a very large man, covered from head to toe with Irish Setter-like colored, long hair. It was in a squatting position, as I said before, with one arm folded up against its body, and the other picking material up off the ground and placing what it was picking in the folded up hand. As we got closer, it lifted its head up and my eyes and its eyes locked for as long as it took for us to pass. The creature didn't look mean or angry, or even frightened. It was as if we were both frozen. It looked more quizzical than anything else. And I was just dumbfounded. It didn't run. It just stared. My stepmother only got a good enough look to floor the accelerator. I thought about calling somebody when we got home, like the Sheriff's office, but was afraid that if it was what I thought it was, they might shoot it. THERE IS NO WAY it was a person in a costume, because I estimate that if it had been standing, it would have stood about 7 feet tall. I was no more than 12 feet away from it and got a good look. I have no doubt that it was a Skunk Ape (What they call Big Foot in Florida).

The next day I called the man who owned the property and asked him if he had ever seen anything strange on his property and he said he had recently been having a very bad time with something or someone getting in his garden and taking his vegetables. But... when I finally conceded and told him what I saw, he thought I was nuts! He said that I must have been smoking "wacky tabacky" that night! I swear I wasn't!

So...that's my story! If nothing else, it's interesting and something I certainly will never ever forget! I really do believe that I saw what I saw and even find myself worrying about where it might be, now that everything in that area is commercialized and congested.
