Location:
I was driving south east from Ft. Drum headed toward Okeechobee at dusk on US Hwy 441 North. It's hard to pinpoint the exact spot as the area is miles and miles of cow pastures with forests at the back of the pastures. The animals had to cross wide open land to cross the road and then cross more wide open land to the saftey of the forest. The area is sparsely populated.

REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: I was driving from Ft. Drum toward Okeechobee at dusk Jan. 18, 2004. I keep a close eye on the sides of road at that time as deer crossings are quite common. The road appeared clear ahead of me so I took the opprotunity to remove my sun glasses and put them in my purse. When I looked back at the road a small hominid was taking the last steps toward the side of the road and leaped across the drainage ditch. All of which was at great speed.

I tired to reason in my mind it was a limpkin or perhaps a sandhill crane but knew it wasn't right. Then I saw your program Jan. 26 on the Redwood creature. A witness on that porgram said he had seen a three foot tall creature cross the road in front of him in NC. It was then I knew what I had seen.

The hominid was about 3 1/2 feet tall. Had a very round head and no neck. It's hair was light brownish red and long and silky looking. No obvious mats or tangles. I saw the left arm, it hung almost to the knee. I think I noticed a light color tan that would be the side of the foot with the hair lightly covering over it. I'm sure it had it's face turned away from me and I was looking at the back of the head. It was small but seemed very well built. Although it was a distance from me I'm sure I saw all the details perfectly. Perhaps it was larger but it wasn't as tall as the hood of my Toyota truck.

When it came to the edge of the road it jumped. No swinging of the arms for momentum, no flapping movement like a bird hopping over a fence. It just leaned slightly forward and leaped and disappeared.

I slowed down to about 20 mph and watched the side of the road and came to where I thought it had been but saw nothing. No moving water, no moving bushes, nothing running across the pasture, nothing. I looked more in the ditch than across the pasture. It had to have cleared the barbed wire fence past the ditch and dropped down behind the bushes maybe 25 feet total. Or was under the water or I wasn't in the right place.

Florida has a history of Skunk Ape sightings but all are said to be very big. I feel like I saw a youngster. Big hominids have to be little hominds first. We have no idea how fast they grow and move off on their own. There have been sightings over the years in a 60 mile radius of this area and I'd like to hope there is a breeding population out there.

Several years ago my son and I were on the Kissimmee River, in western Okeechobee County, in the middle of nowhere and heard a call. It came from a distance but it was like nothing we had ever heard. My son brushed it off saying it must be the call of the big bellied redneck out hunting. We laughed it off but kept a watch around us.

In the mid 1970's a hominid tormented a hunter in a wildlife management are not far from here. It shook and rocked his camper all night while screaming. It's said the University of Florida sent someone to collect casts of the foot prints. I have no idea how true any of that it is but I did hear the hunter talk about the encounter for years after.

In the mid 70's a hominid showed up on a golf course in North Palm Beach, Florida scaring the golfers away. That is within the 60 mile radius too. It could be the population is moving inland to quiter, less populated land to make their home.

I don't know what any of this will do for you but it makes me feel better to tell someone. Last night after the Redwood program my husband laughed at me and said she's gone around the bend. But this morning after he laid awake thinking about other strange happenings we have had in the woods in our 35 year marriage he's not so sure I'm loopy.
