Location: (Black Hills) At this time we are going to go back up in there and set up a possible recording. It's really remote and off old logging roads and we want to keep this confidential until we can see if we can record what we heard the first time.

REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: My husband and his friend went camping in "the Hills" to catch a good site for foliage in the Black Fox-Deerfield area. My husband's friend, Jim hadn't been up there in 20 years, and the old logging roads were overgrown but still "passable" with a couple of exceptions. They did the "man" thing. They built a campsite, sat around roasted hot dogs, drank a few beers, laughed, joked and shot off Jim's 44 magnum. Then they went to bed. Jim had pitched his little tent and my husband just slept about 8 feet from his (Jim's tent) in a sleeping bag. One coal, Jim said was glowing in the firepit. Other than he could barely make out my husband, Bill's outline, and the pickup taillights. Jim was laying there, falling asleep and he heard a "weird" whooping sound. He was trying to eliminate what it wasn't. It came down the ridge in front of them and he said it was making this same "weird" sound, intermittitently all the while. At first he thought maybe a big owl, but not that "bird like" whistle. It was totally different and had to be "big". He unzipped the tent flap and tried to see, but nothing and now it sounded as if it was right there, and he was worried about my husband so he drew his weapon, but it moved away and up behind them, then. I studied Anthro and want us all to go back there, and see if it happens, again. I have a tape recorder and we're hashing out a trip wire photo flash gizmo. Thanks, Amy M. Cleveland PS Jim said it was eerily "quiet". By that he meant that he couldn't hear any brush or snapping spruce twigs. He waited to do so. The first sound recording on this web-site is pretty close to what it sounded like. My husband didn't hear a thing! In short, he slept like a rock, through it all!
