REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: I bear hunt in this area in the springtime, I usually spot bears on the opposite side of the canyon, and on this day I saw something different. It was spitting intermittent rain and tufts of fog were blowing up the canyon when I saw a dark object moving through the fog on the opposite side of the canyon. I readied my rifle and when I looked through the scope, my heart jumped because it looked like a person in a dark snowmobile suit. I thought, oh my God, I am pointing a loaded rifle at a person. I put the rifle down, the whole time thinking what is a person doing down there?

I dug my binocs out of the pack and to get a better look, as the fog drifted clear, I could see across the canyon about 300 yards that this was absolutely not a person. What I had mistaken for a dark snowmobile suit was actually a body covered in longish very dark, shaggy hair. This thing was standing on two legs and looking up the mountain toward the rim of the canyon and I was still not mentally convinced that this was no a person that I was looking at and that my mind was messing with me. The only conclusion that I could come to was that was that it looked like a big hairy ape with long, thick legs and a straight up and down torso. Once it registered in my mind that this was not a person, I got a bad case of the shakes. I don’t know if it sensed that I saw it or if it was the rush of fear that I experienced, but this animal turned and looked at the exact spot I was sitting and it took off at a goofy sort of run directly parallel from my left to my right side down the canyon.

I have packed bears out of that side of the canyon and I know how steep and treacherous the ground is on that side. Very very steep, a person moves very slowly and uses his hands to keep from slipping and falling. This thing ran and covered about 150 yards, without using his hands, in less than half a minute’s time. I have shot literally dozens and dozens of big game in the years that I have been hunting. I like to think that I am an excellent marksman; very seldom do I miss or take more than one shot to kill the game. This thing rattled me so bad that I could not get a shot off (I am awfully glad of this now that I look back because I truly don’t know what it was). This is the first time that I have told anyone, don’t know why I picked you, but do what you will with the info, maybe you can find out what it was.

The bottom of this canyon has Wilkinson Creek running through it and there are many small caves on the bottom along the creek. Heavy blow downs, lots of moss and mushrooms. I also believe that there may be a warm springs along the creek bottom as the canyon floor literally steams in cooler weather. There is also lots of round moss covered stone along the creek. If you go, you are on your own. I won’t go in there anymore. Also, be careful, the canyon is extremely steep and it is extremely dangerous to traverse not to mention it is full of black bears in the springtime, but I think that is the least of your worries.
