REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: Four bellows occurred 10 minutes apart. First bellow proceeded by a cool wind in 85-90 degree weather, then a smell, not something dead, but smelly. Then nature became quiet. The sound came from the West and higher elevation. "aaaaaaahhrrrr-ahr", was the syllable with a mournful, exile tone. I estimate a half mile in distance. I wondered if the hike and bike club from Michigan down at the bridge (2 miles away) on the Popo Agie river might have heard it as well (I had just left them), or the group of 15 hikers on their way down to the bridge. Two more bellows sounded before I got to my car at Worthen Meadows near the lake, the same as above, about 10+ seconds long. It came from the west up on the hill. Then the 4th occurred while at my car. I noticed that all the campers at the lake had gone. But I came up on the weekend (July 22) and it was a weekday when I heard the sound. There was a Ranger Vehicle parked haphazard in the middle of the car park where backpackers park their vehicles, but no one was at the area except three young men. The three youths were at a campsite 150 feet away from my car when they heard the sound and became quiet and quickly left the scene. My first impression at the top of the hill was 'no one is going to believe me...Master Mahan'. Second impression, 'maybe a big bear'. I wasn't scared.
