REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: When I was 14 I was going rabbit hunting. It was in the late afternoon. Rabbits start coming out of their dens or holes at this time, or early mornings. I had my black and tan hound dog with me and my model 16 single shot .22 Springfield rifle. We started along the inside part of a tree line. We got about 1/4 of the way down the line when my dog starting acting strange and scared. He was climbing up my legs and rolling in front of my legs. His hair was up and he was peeing all over the place. Finally he took off and ran back to the ranch. I did not know what was wrong with him at the time so I started walking.
After about 6 or 7 steps, I started to get a uneasy feeling. My hair started to stand up on the back of my neck and arms. Then I heard a foot step on the other side of the tree line. I stopped, it stopped. I would take about four or five steps, then I could hear another step. I would stop and it would stop. I was afraid to go back. I was thinking whatever it was might get me, at the time.
Finally I got to end of the tree line. I walked maybe 30 to 40 feet down to a part of the orchard we called the sand hole when I heard a type of low, raspy grunt. I turned and looked. I didn't see anything. I was really scared at this point so I started running. I ran about 150 to 200 yards to the edge of this gorge. It was getting a little dusky at this time. I was too scared to go back so I moved around in front of this big brush pile. It had dead trees in it so I figured whatever it was would have to get me from the front. I squatted and waited for about 8 to 10 minutes.
Thinking it was gone, I stood up. When I did I heard a crash at the head of the gorge. I aimed my rifle over the top of where I heard the noise and shot to try to scare it away, whatever it was. When I shot, all hell broke lose. It started crashing down the gorge. It sounded like huge man running through heavy brush or something. It went crash-crash-crash-crash and so on. At the same time I could smell something really bad. At that point I was in shock. I could not move. I could not see what it was. The trees and saplings were too tall.
When it got down to the bottom where it opens up, I could see the back of the head. It was cone shaped and dark. It ran around the right side of the bottom and up Warm Springs Canyon. I turned and ran as fast as I could back to the ranch house. When I got into the house I forgot to put my gun up. I walked into the living room and stood there. My grandma asked me, "What's wrong? You look really pale and out of breath."
I told my grandparents what had happened. So after a sleepless night, my grandpa and myself went back to the gorge. We walked down into it and, in the middle of it, you could see were something had tore down through it. We could still smell it. my grandpa told me not to go around there for awhile. I could tell he felt uneasy too. As for my dog, Dan, he ran away and I never saw him again.
