Wood "chops" and whooping heard in early morning

Nearest town: Good Grief
Nearest road: US Highway 2
Conditions: 50's, Rainy
Time: early morning
Location: North of Highway 2 roughly 3.5 miles heading towards the Canuck Basin.

REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: One evening about 1:30 am I heard, what sounded like, someone chopping firewood maybe 50 yards from our camp. This went on for about 35 minutes and suddenly stopped. There was no one within 10 miles of us. We went looking for other hunters and found no one.
The next morning we were awakened by strange, loud whooping noises maybe 35 yards from our camp. We are both biologists and have never heard anything like this ever.
