Dogs chased out of the woods by something

Location: Just past Strawberry Spring a dirt road turns off of the highway to the right (if you are northbound). It is perhaps 1/2 to one mile up this road that the incident occured.

REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: This is an experience that happened to my brother Brian and his friend Gary. They were camped for the night without a fire because of the light rain that had been falling during the evening. The road they were camped on dead-ended a little further into the forest and there was nobody else in the area but them. Brian was in his sleeping bag under his pickup along with his two dogs, a yellow lab and an Irish setter, and Gary was under a pine off to the side.
At some point the two dogs started growling at something they sensed out in the dark. As they got more and more agitated, Brian finally told them to "go ahead and get 'em". The two dogs took off out into the dark, barking and growling after whatever was out there. Suddenly there was a LOUD scream unlike anything either Brian or Gary had ever heard before. "I know what a mountain lion sounds like and it wasn't a mountain lion," Brian said afterwards.
Following the first scream both dogs came racing back into the camp where Brian and Gary were now standing asking each other "What the **** is that?" Whatever it was was coming after the dogs and let out several more screams as it came. The dogs were absolutely terrified. They ran to where the two men stood and began rolling on the ground at their feet, a behavior Brian had never seen them do before. These were both very brave dogs (both males), but whatever they ran into out in the dark had really thrown a scare into them!
The unseen creature came to about 30 yards distance. Brian called out, "Make yourself known or we'll shoot." Both Brian and Gary were armed by that time. Whatever was out there was still coming after the dogs and they fired several shots in it's general direction. Whereupon the attack ended and it left. The dogs spent the rest of the night very quiet and obviously very frightened as were the two men.
