REPORT DETAIL

Description of event: I[confidential per request] on a large ranch. We had about 4 inches of snow with about 1/4 inch of ice last Tuesday evening January 11, 2011. It had been raining for the last 2-3 days and I wanted to get out for a walk. It was a light mist by the time I went. I have seen black bears last summer as well as lots of cougar scat and tracks. I have also seen 4 lynx on 5 different occasions. I always take a hand gun and my camera. It is about 2 to 3 miles back to the creek and with all the rain most of the snow was gone. I saw some cougar scat and lots of deer tracks in the mud along the road that the land owner cut back through there. As I got close to the creek going down hill(I always walk quietly there) the creek was very loud. I was taking pictures and noticed several elk tracks which I did not know to be in the area and then I came across an area along the road along the creek that was still covered with snow and saw these unusual prints. When I look at tracks I try to determine if they are bear, cougar, etc and if I should be alarmed or cautious and how fresh they might be. I was absolutely stunned when I observed these two relatively crisp tracks. Mind you it has been raining for the past few days and there was no snow on the ground here before the snow and ice on Tuesday night January 11th. I looked and studied the prints for some time and took several photos including placing my left boot next to the right foot print. I wear a size 8 boot but the sole of my boot is right at 12 inches in length and about 5 to 5-1/2 inches wide. It looked like about a 3-1/2 to 4 ft stride and the heel was sunk into the snow deeper than the toes. After taking pictures I proceeded down stream on my walk to see if I could see any more. These foot prints were probably 2-3 days old as we had about 1/4 inch of ice on top of the snow and it started raining on Thursday. These prints were in an area where there was a lot of elk tracks and deer tracks.
