Description of event: While on an elk hunting trip last fall in the Selway/Bitteroot wilderness area of Idaho, I got up about 0500 to get ready to hunt. My son, age 30 was still in his bunk when I went outside the tent. It was still dark. I heard, what I thought was the beginning of a wolf howl. Having lived in northern Alberta, I know what a wolf howl sounds like. After a couple notes the sound changed to more of an elk bugle type sound for a few notes and then changed again to a few hoots similar to chimpanzee sounds. I am 61 years old, have hunted, fished and camped in the northwest for 50 years, worked for the US Forest Service and the state of Idaho in wilderness areas and have never heard a sound like this before. As soon as the sound ended I told my son to give a bugle as I thought there might be a possibility of the sound coming from an elk. We received no response. My son is an ex-army paratrooper/sniper that served two tours in Iraq and is currently serving Afganistan. He, also has never heard anything similar. At first light we looked for tracks in the area the sound came from but found nothing. It was possibly some bird neither of us has ever heard before.
