Description of event: There is a ridge that runs through the middle of the clearing. A bush road goes around the ridge. The clearing is about half mile long on each side of the ridge. I was on the first side. I have about 42 years as a very successful big game hunter and am very knowledgeable of the wilderness. Many years ago I developed a loud call that works well on bringing in Bull Moose in the hight of rutting season even though it does not sound anything like a moose. Less than 200 yards into the clearing is a small landing where I decided do this moose call until dark (about 3 hours away). After calling for about half an hour I heard a faint response at the far end if the clearing close to where the road goes around the end of the ridge. For the next 20 or more minutes everytime I called I would get a response that sounded like a large stick being hit on a tree. I must have called 50 times and got the same response. I don't remember if there was any type of pattern to the banging but sometimes there was several bangs close together. About half way through this time frame I could see with my 10 power binoculars a dark figure against a very large Fir Tree but could not make out any detail. A few times I could see a slight flicker of brown that seemed to be making the bang noise. Some fellow hunters came by and stopped to talk to me then proceeded along the road to go to the back side of the ridge. As their vehicle got to within 300 or 400 yards ot the Fir Tree, I noticed a dark figure had moved fro behind the tree and was standing 10 to 15 feet away from it. Because of distance and lighting and shaking optics I couldn't tell if it was an antlerless moose, Bear standing up or what it might be. All I could tell is that the hight was probably at least the hight of a man or larger. Then it turned and took two or three steps and disappeared behind the tree. My first thought was another hunter. But who in their right mond would stand and bang on a tree that long of a time. Besides if it was another hunter banging on a tree would certainly scare off anything within ear shot. I camped at this spot for the night. I was alone so my sesnses were functioning quite sharp. That night something large was moving around my camp off and on for possibly more that an hour. I could hear movement in the dry grass but could not see anything, but I could tell that what ever it was it was large. It was a dark night with no moon light. The next day I looked around my camp and could see a lot of dry grass was downed but no tracks. I went over to the big Fir tree to look around but nothing could be seen. A few days later I came back and I went up onto the top of the ridge and walked the full length of it. The area was quite open, no large trees but clumps of new growth up to about 10 feet high. There was a small water pond at the top. No identifiable tracks could be seen other than moose and deer. I noticed some strange pilings of large stick and small peices of small logs that resembled primitive effort at a lean-to shelter which were up against stands of new growth and some small trees that looked like they had been twisted off and bent over. When you have spent as much time in the back woods hunting big game as long as I have you instinctively develop a type of extra sense ability. From when I first heard the banging on the tree in response to my moose call a few days earlier to this point in time there was something gnawing away at me but I couldn't put my finger on it. The image that I had seen step behind the Fir tree was definately a large man or such. The banging on the tree didn't make any sense. Why would someone be up here putting wood together into what appeared to be shelter. What could have twisted off those small trees. I have absolutely no idea why but all of this has haunted me for about the last 20 years until just a few months ago when I read on the internet sites about Sasquatch that this was his type of behavior and doings. I feel that a big load has been lifted off of my mind because now the haunting makes sense. In closing I would like to say that few people can claim to be as successful and knowledgeable a big game hunter as I can and I believe that I understand wild animals in the bush a lot better than I understand people.
